N26 vs. Traditional Banks - Is it worth switching?
Many people opened their first account at a traditional branch bank. At some point the question arises: do I still need a branch, or is a pure online bank enough? I compared both sides.
Account fees
Most traditional banks in Europe now charge between 3 and 10 EUR per month for a current account. On top of that, there are often fees for transfers, statements, or the debit card. The N26 Standard account costs nothing. Even the Smart account with sub-accounts is cheaper at 4.90 EUR than many traditional bank accounts. Over a year, that can easily be a 50 to 120 EUR difference.
App and features
N26 is clearly ahead here. Real-time notifications for every payment, lock and unlock your card in seconds, adjust limits yourself, Spaces for sub-accounts. Most traditional banking apps can do some of this now too, but the experience at N26 is noticeably faster and more modern. Account opening takes under 10 minutes instead of several days.
Cash and branches
This is the only area where traditional banks win. With thousands of branches and ATM networks, cash is never a problem. N26 offers 3 to 8 free withdrawals per month depending on your plan, and you can deposit and withdraw cash at participating retail stores via Cash26. If you rarely need cash, that is enough. If you are at the counter every week, a branch bank is the better choice.
Customer support
Traditional banks have branches with personal advice. N26 offers chat support in the app and email. If you need personal advice for loans or mortgages, a branch bank is the better option. For everyday account matters, N26 support is perfectly adequate.
My verdict
For most people who mainly use their account digitally, rarely need cash, and don't require advice for complex financial products, N26 is the cheaper and more modern choice. Traditional banks have their strengths in cash access and personal advice. Many people also use both: N26 as their main account for everyday use and a traditional bank for specific needs.
